Barbara J. Howard
Barbara J. Howard is the principal of the law firm of Barbara J. Howard Co., L.P.A., a practice that focuses in family law. Howard has practiced in the area of family law her entire legal career, and it has been her sole focus for at least the last 27 years. Her practice covers domestic relations, paternity and related juvenile law. She has been certified by the Ohio State Bar Association (OSBA) as a Family Relations Law Specialist since it was first made available in 1999. Howard is also trained in Collaborative Law, and is a member of the Cincinnati Academy of Collaborative Professionals (CACP).
Howard is a Past President of the Ohio State Bar Association (OSBA) and a past president of the Cincinnati Bar Association (CBA). She presently serves on the Board of the Volunteer Lawyers for the Poor. She is very active in the American Bar Association (ABA) where she has served in the House of Delegates since 1986. She has held a variety of positions in the American Bar Association, currently serving as Chair of the ABA’s Standing Committee on Membership. She is also Ohio’s State Delegate to the ABA House of Delegates. She has just completed six years of service as a member of the ABA Journal Board of Editors. Howard has been one of nine attorneys and judges working through the OSBA Family Law Committee to re-write Ohio’s spousal support statute, an effort that has spanned over 10 years.
Howard is also active in non-legal aspects of the Cincinnati community. She has been a member of the Board of Trustees of Xavier University since 1995 where she chairs its Academic Affairs Committee and serves on its Executive Committee, Nominations and Governance Committee, and Diversity and Inclusions Committee. She also serves on the Boards of Trustees of the Athenaeum and of Cincinnati Union Bethel.
On May 14, 2011, Howard gave the commencement address to the University of Cincinnati College Of Law Class of 2011. Howard is a 1979 graduate of the Law School. On May 15, 2010, Howard gave the undergraduate commencement address for Xavier University where she received the Xavier University Distinguished Alumna Award. Howard is the first female graduate to be so honored. Howard also received the Cincinnati Bar Association’s 2010 Trustees’ Award at the CBA’s Annual Meeting held on April 30, 2010. In addition, she received the 2010 Alumna Achievement Award from St. Ursula Academy in Toledo.
Howard is a graduate of Xavier University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science magna cum laude and received her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Cincinnati College Of Law. Howard is a native of Toledo.
